Foundations of College Writing
I took Dr. Sherrys foundations of college writing class this semester and I have learned many things. including ways to read, view, and listen to ideas and work and interpret them myself and display them in an appropriate manner for a given audience. threw this portfolio I will give examples of each of the give terms. this class has prepared me with tools that have and will continue to educate me threw the future.
Goal A. Students will be able to compose for particular audiences and purposes.
this goal is about how after taking this class we have gained tools, knowledge and experience in being able to get the same information to different groups of people based on a purpose. for this example I chose to use two brochures that I made both with the topic of "non-traditional college students" but one with the information directed at incoming students and one at teachers and faculty.
in both of theses examples I'm trying to get across information regarding non-traditional college students and how to possibly better their experience and yours regardless if your a professor, a traditional or non-traditional student.
Goal B. Students are able to compose using language and conventions appropriate to genre.
this goal is stating how we have learned that we would not use the same type of language structure in a letter to a potential employer as we would in a poster advertising safe sex. for this example I chose to use the satire that I made comparing traditional and non-traditional students mind sets and ways of thinking. this satire is in cartoon form.
the idea that is displayed here is a simple comparison not necessarily laugh out loud funny. but shows how the ideas that flow threw your traditional 18-22 year old college student differs greatly then the mindset of a middle aged father of two going back to school. both are there essentially for the same thing but the ways that they go about doing it can be greatly different.(not true in all cases)
Goal C. Students will be able to read, select, and use evidence critically to formulate and support arguments.
this goal is saying how we are now able to preform proper research, find and identify critical information and utilize it to support and idea or argument for. for this example I chose to use a research paper that I wrote for this class on the topic of traditional vs non-traditional students. in comparison with their daily lives their motivators and even test scores. because numbers don't lie but they might surprise you.
this paper points out key points in the lives of traditional and non traditional students. it also explores different varieties of what we consider to be non-traditional students and how to become one if it is right for you.
Goal D. Students will be able to interpret and compose in a variety of media and print/ non-print genres.
this goal is stating how we can now read articles, view videos, hear audio and see cartoons and take information gathered from each of the items and display it in a way that is desired for any reason. for this I chose to use a letter to a potential employer that we were asked to write as one of the steps in our projects. taking accomplishments and always praised numbers and displaying them in a way that is attractive to a potential employer.
this letter used information collected and fabricated to show a compelling argument for employment based on skill, history, and personal accomplishments.
Goal E. Students will be able to discuss and apply appropriate writing processes both individually and in collaborative contexts.
this goal is saying how we now know how to discuss our work and ideas with other team or group members to make everyone's ideas more thought out, detailed and all around better. for this example I am using feed back given to be from my foundations of college writing professor Dr. Sherry.
I gave an example of work prior to and post feed back to show how I can use someone else's ideas to better my work. just by having another perspective on your work makes you see it in a different light. maybe you thought your work was horrid and someone says other wise because they saw it slightly different then your self.
